List of Yijing Ruling Lines

HOME

Introduction

I was not able to find a table of the ruling lines of the Yijing (I Ching) online, though I am sure it is out there somewhere. Therefore, I compiled this one out of the the Wilhelm-Baynes translation of the Yijing, which follows the lines given by Li Guangdi (1642–1718). Some corrections and suggestions were taken from S J Marshall’s discussion of ruling lines on biroco.com, and that site should be consulted for advice on how to make use of the ruling lines.

In the table below, a large circle, ◯, represents a governing ruler, and a square, □, represents a constituting ruler. If there is only a circle for a particular hexagram, then it is both a constituting and governing ruler. Suggestions from Marshall’s site are given in parentheses, where an (x) represents that the ruler should be omitted. Hexagram 61 has a governing ruler on the second line, though it is omitted from the Wilhelm-Baynes translation in error.
